The Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cornelius Cornelius, represented Cyprus this week at the online launch of the LGBTI+ Strategy of the Equal Rights Coalition (ERC), to which Cyprus has been a member since 2018.

The main objective of the ERC is to better communicate and support each other between governments and non-governmental organisations to promote LGBTI rights.

The two-day conference was attended by ministers and government representatives from 42 countries as well as representatives of international and civil society organisations.

The conference presented the ERC's five-year plan for the advancement of LGBTI+ rights around the world, which takes into account the challenges and opportunities related to LGBTI+ rights in the current global environment, diplomatic and development tools, ERC capabilities, available resources and requirements to the ERC, as well as the potential for further strategic partnerships to promote its work.

On this basis, the ERC will give priority to cooperation with civil society for the five years from 2021-2026 with the objectives of:

  • Eliminate violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender characteristics.
  • Ending the criminalisation of LGBTI+ relationships and penalties for LGBTI+ people
  • Promoting the implementation and monitoring of SDGs for the integration of LGBTI+
  • The development and growth of the ERC
